Artist reveals 800 daydreams on the Jubilee line.

Fast cars, exotic destinations, sinister cats, financial woes and plans for an unborn child; these are just a handful of the 800 responses from Tube passengers to a recent daydream survey undertaken at 10 different stations on the Jubilee line by artist Daria Martin.

Martin’s daydream survey was created as part of an ongoing series of new contemporary art commissions on the Jubilee line by Art on the Underground. Answers to the simple question “What have you been daydreaming about on the Tube?” is appearing across the network in the form of posters from (today) Monday 23 August onwards, accompanied by specially selected images of Freud’s desk from the Freud Museum. The answers will also be available to read online where customers are encouraged to email their daydream experiences on the Tube.

The responses suggest that we frequently transport ourselves into the realms of fantasy. These kinds of fantasies are harnessed, analysed and depicted by artists, psychologists, and advertisers, but more often they go unnoticed, even by the daydreamer themselves. Martin’s survey reveals the musings of the idle mind, in all its myriad forms and brings to light Londoners’ secret thoughts, hopes and fears.
