The Squaring of the Circle, Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell
The “squaring of the circle” is one of the many archetypal motifs which form the basic patterns of our dreams and fantasies… Indeed, it could even be called the archetype of wholeness.”
C. G. Jung, The Archetypes and The Collective Unconscious, trans. from Du, 1955
Bolton & Chappell’s practice explores the sensual abundance of contemporary life and the attempts to limit and restrain complexity through systems and structures. Drawing on motifs developed through a collaborative method of automatic drawing their installations are a celebration of the visual profusion of everyday experience. Borrowing form from swirling galaxies, pyramids, molecular shapes, fractals, helixes and complex geometric formations they have created The Squaring of the Circle—a series of 14 mandalas and a floor-based painting installation.
