Nicholas Pankhurst, Europa
Europa, a new site-specific installation for the gallery, is a sculptural rendering of real and imaginary landscapes inhabited by the artist and his memories. Alongside the installation will be a series of digital prints, with details hand painted by the artist.
Taking its title Europa from the 1991 film directed by Lars von Trier, which was influenced by Amerika, the incomplete first novel of author Franz Kafka, published posthumously in 1927. Both the film and novel have influenced Pankhurst’s ideas for the show, which he characteristically describes as “a pile of different maps of a city from different time periods – then on the top map there would be the intervention of someone cutting holes in the map to revealmoments in the city history… Then the map would work three dimensionally as well as two and would be as much about the intentions of the person who cut the holes to see what they could find as it would be about the maps.”
