Opened in 1806, its public gallery space complements the 200-year-old collection and hosts a changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions. Having recently renovated the display areas The Portico invite applications and expressions of interest from individual artists, groups and organisations who would like to exhibit in this unique space.

As a non-profit venue, The Portico requires exhibitors to cover some costs (details of which are available on enquiry) but offers free staffing and invigilation six days a week for the duration of all shows, extensive promotion and a stunning setting in the heart of one of the UK’s leading cultural cities. Revenue generated from exhibitions is shared directly between the artists and the library’s vital restoration and conservation programme. The Portico welcome submissions in all media and particularly like to hear from artists who wish to incorporate or respond to the material in The Portico’s collection in innovative and engaging ways.
