Schwartz Gallery Swot Up

Running since 2008, Schwartz Gallery exhibits both national and international emerging and mid-career artists, working primarily with installation, sculpture, video, performance and sound art. Art Licks has a soft spot for this gallery and threw some questions at Ismail and Patrick for a little bit more of an insight into the gallery life.

AL: What has been the best bit for you and Ismail, of running Schwartz Gallery so far?

SG: The two-person shows that we are dong at the moment because they are an exciting model for showing artist’s work.

How did you bag such a fantastic space for the gallery?

We live above the gallery, which was a printing factory and when it became vacant we approached the landlord with the idea of doing an exhibition and he said yes! The rest is down to hard work and determination.

3 reasons to come and see your next show?

Victorian tornados, spinning skirting boards and newspaper horns.

3 things that are happening at your gallery, or in the area around that are too good to miss?

The next three shows at Schwartz Gallery of course! Piers Jamson and Alistair McClymont, Franz Ehmann who we invited from Brisbane, Australia and Jorge Rivera and wait for it....... Georgina Starr and Paul Noble present FLESH: The Great Illusion An exhibition celebrating the life and work of Ronald (Ronaldo) Wright!

If you could have a pint with any artist – living, or dead – who would it be and why?

It would have to be someone half-dead that could let us know what’s going on at the BIG Private View up in the sky! Then we could look all smug down at our local...when we eventually get a pub in Hackney Wick.
